Educational Flaws Cartoon
This cartoon depicts a man at an interview with human resources at a job opportunity. The lady interviewing him is looking at his resume and says, "I see you did well in school, but what real-world skills do you have?" All the man replies is, "Tests. I can take tests." This accurately reveals a major flaw in America's education system: We learn how to memorize facts and regurgitate what we are taught but never seem to brush upon the skills needed to actually live in a world outside of the classroom.
Living in a society where knowledge is measured by your ability to take tests and write papers does not teach an individual very much. Yes, you may know that amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and that Grover Cleveland was the 22nd president of the United States, but that is all cosmetic knowledge that will only make you look smart. Being able to recite data won't make your actual problems go away when it comes to the world outside of school walls. This is where we can see that something other than society's education is necessary to teach us how to thrive in the real world. That teacher could very well be the unpredictability of nature.
When there is a problem with your education, a problem with your money making abilities usually comes hand-in-hand. But, this issue with income has exploded into something inescapable, that even a good education usually can't conquer. By the following video, we can see that wealth inequality is a rapidly growing concern in American society.
