"Wealth Inequality in America" By Politizane
This youtube video reveals the shocking wealth gap that exists in America today. The video opens with a graphic used to show the difference between the ideal, thought to be, and actual wealth distribution in America. The survey used to collect this information found that 92% of people believed that wealth should be distributed on a slight curve, in order to keep things fair but still motivate citizens to work hard. These same surveyed people thought that wealth was distributed on a much harsher curve with much more money for the rich than the poor. But, the middle class was still fairly well off in this scenario. The actual distribution of wealth in this country is much more shocking. The poor are left with virtually nothing and even the middle class is scraping to get by while the wealthy have more money than they even know what to do with. 1% of America has 40% of all the nation's wealth while the bottom 80% only possesses 7% of the wealth. This statistic defines the whole video and shows just how devastating the gap between the wealthy and the poor really is.
One of the biggest flaws in American society is the huge wealth gap that seems to only grow bigger as time goes on. You know there is something wrong when the majority of the population has only a tiny amount of the nation's money while an elite few controls the rest. This inequality is unfortunately one of the defining traits of our country and doesn't seem to have an end in sight. This kind of thing is what makes our society so unappealing at times. It is not attractive to look down the streets of cities and see impoverished families begging for a meal then to shift your gaze and see a man with a million dollar watch on his wrist. There is something horribly wrong with the balance of our wealth yet there is nothing being done to fix it. There is something to be learned from going back to the basics where it all began: the natural world. Animals only eat when they are hungry, allowing a balance between the predator and the prey. Yet the wealthy don't stop accumulating money when they have enough to sustain an extremely comfortable lifestyle. They take more, more, more, leaving the poor with barely enough pocket change to get by.
This issue directly correlates with American's problem with materialism and addiction to things. Many are unsatisfied with having just plenty of money, but they want plenty of stuff as well. This causes the need for more, more, more as shown in the following article from the Huffington Post.
