Technology Addiction in Kids Cartoon By Gary Varvel
This cartoon criticizes the American youth's addiction to technology and their isolation from nature. In the cartoon, a mother is bringing her son outside, introducing him to the outdoors. The little boy claims he recognizes it from a level on one of his video games, but appears to have never experienced nature in person before. The little boy is also still clutching onto his video game controller, as if he couldn't bear to part with it.
Even though this cartoon obviously exaggerates our society's current situation, it gets the idea across: America's youth are becoming increasingly involved with electronic entertainment and are barely experiencing any nature as a result. Kids are so caught up with their video games and new gadgets that they are shutting themselves away inside and neglecting a world of exploration right outside their door. By the way the boy in the cartoon is dragging his video game controller outside with him, we can also see how electronics have become a sort of security blanket for youth. Kids are becoming unable to entertain themselves without a device and don't go anywhere without them. This reliance is draining the creativity that is usually so abundant in the minds of children and replacing it with a consuming addiction that casts a shadow over their childhood.
As a result of all of this addiction to technology in American society, we can see our priorities beginning to shift. The following quote reveals our country's tendency to worship electronics over anything else.
