"Where is the Love?" By The Black Eyed Peas
This song is all about what's wrong with the world, specifically America and it's society. It touches on many different problems our country faces including racism, war/fighting, and dishonesty. One line says, "Most of us only care about money making", showing the materialistic lifestyle of Americans and how it contributes to a sense of coldness in society. Another stanza is dedicated to the media and it's negative influence on people, especially kids and the way they act as a result. All of these issues prompt the chorus, which is asking, "Where is the love?" because from the looks of it, there isn't any to be found in American society.
Many of the lines we see in this song lead us to think about how messed up our society has really become. One line asks, "Can you practice what you preach?/ Or would you turn the other cheek?" Many people promote a cause on social media, only to never actually fight for it in real life. Technology is making it easy to hide behind our screens and make bold claims that we will never follow through with. Another stanza says, "Wrong information always shown by the media/ Negative images is the main criteria/ Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria" which shows how unreliable yet influential we have let media become in our society. People look at things like Twitter and Instagram and see unrealistic expectations that society has for us. We also see things that aren't necessarily true yet still accept it as if it were law. These, and many more examples in the song, reveal the dark side to the American society.
One flaw that has come to be a major problem is issues in the education system. The next artifact looks at how our society has forced kids to become so focused on testing, that they don't even have time to learn about real-world skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
