"Spending on Technology Equals More Obesity, Study Shows" By Maggie Fox
This article analyzes a report on the effect of technology on obesity rates. The two are obviously directly related: The more time we spend sitting around using electronics, the less calories we burn and the bigger we become. But, this report uses statistics to finally prove that our world's addiction to technology is causing very negative physical effects. The report found that for every 10% increase in a country's spending on information and communication technology, there is a 1.4% rise in obesity within that country. That may not seem like a lot but, in the U.S., a 1.4% increase means that approximately 4.2 million more people will develop obesity. This increases the risk for things like diabetes and heart attacks as well. The worst part is, instead of heeding these warnings, technology use is just increasing even more.
This article highlights the alarming fact that our society has become a breeding ground for obesity due to the overwhelming use of technology. There is no break from the onslaught of new electronics luring us in. We have become stationary, allowing one device to perform every task for us, seldom moving from the couch, causing our body's to slowly give up on us. There isn't a lot of self control present among us either to resist the urge to spend consecutive hours on electronics. Something needs to be done about this alarming rate of technology and obesity increase before we are all just technology-addicted zombies who can barely move up off the couch. Spending more time doing "green activities" out in the company of nature could certainly help to reverse some of technology's damage. The wilderness brings us exercise and exploration while society brings us laziness and addiction. Yet somehow, we seem to ignore the horrible effects technology use has on us.
Although the physical effects civilization has on our bodies are pretty negative, the mental effects are even worse. The following article uses a study to prove just how bad urban living is for our mental health.
